The initial purpose of this study was to investigate whether instant messaging (IM) would affect the ability of young people to initiate offline friendship. The second purpose is to study the effectiveness of the two basic mechanisms that explain this relationship. (A) opportunities that IM provides for communicating with various people, and (b) disclosure of personal information. A longitudinal study of 3 waves took place at 690 Dutch youth (10-17 years old). As a result, it turned out that the use of IM by teenagers increases the ability to start offline friendship over time. In addition, IM indirectly enhances the ability of young people to build friendship offline, through the diversity of online communication partners. These findings suggest that teenagers can practice social skills online and learn to interact with a variety of people.

The authors point out that the extracurricular activities "are usually voluntary and safe environments, so they are unique settings for promoting friendship in schools" (Schaefer et al., 2011) .
