Portuguese Immigration to Canada

The Portuguese emigrated to Canada around the 19th century. It all began when Portuguese pioneers emigrated to Canada in 1953 (Moura, 2003). When Portuguese's first settlers crossed the sea to emigrate to Canada, others started following it. However, the volcanic eruption of 1957, known as Capelinhos, eventually moved the Portuguese family and pioneers to North America due to changes in the living environment (Morrison & James, 2009).

In the mid-20th century, there was another wave of Portuguese immigration to the United States, mainly in the northeast (New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts). Many Portuguese Americans may include Portuguese born Portuguese settlers (Retornados as Portuguese African, or Portuguese) and descendants of Asia (mainly Macao). By 2000, there were about 1 million Portuguese Americans in the United States. Portuguese (European Portuguese) is used in small US immigration communities in New York City, primarily Newark, New Jersey.
