Population Growth and Standard of Living

Due to population growth and living standards in recent years, the population on this planet has surpassed amazing epoch-making events. It reached 6 billion in 2000, no signs of deceleration are seen, and it is growing at an unprecedented rate. About 3 million years before reaching our first billion years, we have increased the population by 1 billion (5 to 6) times in only 11 years. This growth rate can be interpreted graphically as a J-shaped pattern. If the past suggests the future, it means that despite the fact that we are currently growing rapidly (a net increase of about 87 million people per year) it will continue to increase to the end.

Economic growth is necessary to stimulate people and improve living standards according to the ratio of economic growth and population growth. Living standards are usually measured by criteria such as inflation-adjusted per capita income and poverty rate. Economic growth is the change in production level of products and services in a country over time. Economic growth is usually brought about by technological innovation and positive external forces.

The standard of living depends on the income per capita. Factors affecting per capita income are the same as population growth. An increase in population has led to an increase in demand for foodstuffs, clothing items, housing, etc. but can not increase its supply due to lack of raw materials, skilled labor and capital.

Although the population growth slows down, the absolute number is still increasing - about 1 billion in 13 years. The slowing of population growth helps improve living standards, and it takes time to conserve natural resources. In the long term, in order to maintain a higher standard of living, it is necessary to stabilize the size of the world population. Environmentalists and economists agree more and more that the efforts to protect the environment and achieve better living standards are closely related and reinforce each other. Especially as the demand for natural resources per capita continues to increase, it is possible to spend sustainable time to reduce environmental stress and improve living standards by suppressing population growth 3, 8, 11, 12.
