Population, Industry, and Generals: How the Confederacy Survived to 1865

Both Grant and Lee were in Mexico - fighting during the American War, they were able to gain valuable experience before the Civil War. Historian Gary Gallagher concluded that the Union surrendered in early 1865 as the Northern Army constrained the "organized southern military resistance". The population of the Confederates, soldiers and the general population suffered serious difficulties and social confusion. Since the middle of the 19th century, the population of Texas has increased rapidly. By 1860, the population has increased to 600,000. However, a civil war broke out in 1861. On the same day, General Gordon Granger announced that all Texas slaves are free. In the late nineteenth century, cotton cultivation and beef cultivation became popular in Texas. Then in 1894, oil was discovered in Corsicana. In 1901, spindle top oil was attacked. The oil industry in Texas then prospered. East Texas oilfield was discovered in 1930. At the same time, by 1900, the population of Texas increased to more than 3 million people. In 1950, it has grown rapidly, exceeding 7.7 million people.
