Poe vs. Hawthorne: Dark But Not Necessarily Gothic

Beginning in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, a genre of new literature appeared as a gothic story like a mushroom. In the US, the representative of the most famous Gothic novel is Edgar Allen Poe, whose "terror" story is reminiscent of the dark side. I believe it is hiding under the surface of most everyday life. In this article we discuss Gothic based on Poe's two stories "Ligeia" and "The House of Usher" and compare the story of Poe with the story of Nathaniel Hawthorne "The Minister's Black Veil". "We analyze why the story of Po is gothic and the story of Hawthorne is not so.
