The conversation opened Meno and asked if virtue could be taught what it is. Socrates asked the general definition of Meno's virtue, as Socrates pointed out, I do not know if I can teach virtue unless I know what it is. Socrates is looking for general or formal definition of virtue, not just its examples and examples. Socrates wants to know what is common to all virtues. He wants to know the essence of virtue. Meno originally offered various virtues, but Socrates refused to use it as a complete explanation.

The main purpose of Plato's Menor is to explore the nature of virtue.
