The stage of sensory-motor development is the first of four stages of cognitive development of Piaget. The sensory motor phase consists of 6 lower phases that last from birth to 24 months. The six sub-stages are representative ideas of reflection, primary circulation reaction, secondary circulation reaction, reaction coordination, three cycle reaction and early. As babies progress in each sub-phase, they continue to develop cognitive or thought skills to promote global development.

Jean Piaget is interested in how organism adapts to their environment. Piaget assumes that the baby is born in a pattern working at birth. This is called "reaction". Piaget identified four stages of cognitive development. These four stages are the sensory motor stage, the pre-operation stage, the specific operation stage, and the formal operation stage. Educational psychology develops and applies human development theory to understand the characteristics of learners during childhood, adolescence, adulthood and seniority.
