At the beginning of the novel "The Heart of Darkness", Conrad presented to the audience that Marlow would take on a great and difficult job from "company" Marlow worked. He was sent to sail the African Congo River and introduced a great military official named Kurtz who was believed to be a little crazy when he was sent there. When Marlow was about to sail, he did not know how he entered when he arrived at the Congo River.
The foundation of Dark Heart is a physical journey to Marlow's Congo River to meet Cruz. Marlow, the hero, experienced many physical and psychological changes from the beginning to the end of the story. When Murrow was in the river, he was completely innocent and was approaching Kurtz, but he began to become more aware of the human mind and darkness that was approaching.
The climax meeting of Marlow and Kurz is like a dream. After midnight, Marlow was anesthetized because her halves were awkward. Mahlow chased the return from crawling Kurtz, civilization to barbarous to the center of the jungle, and Marlowe "beat the drum at the center of applause" (121). Conrad 's symbol is obvious. The subsequent battle is executed in Marlow 's unconscious, and the confrontation between Cruz and Marlow is the confrontation of his own soul and Marlow. Of course, between the two characters there is enough similarity to deduce that Kurtz is another one of Marlow 's own self; Kurz is the incarnation of Marlow's (and all others) soul It is evil. Marlow's statement further confirms this: "If someone has fought with the soul, I am that person" (124)
Kurtz and Marlow are mirror images of each other. Marlow was once Kurtz, and Kurtz was what Marlow could do. Both were adversely affected by the experience in Congo. At the end of the story, Marlow's change was very obvious. Near the beginning of the story, he said he was shocked by lies, including "death" (NA 2224) and "death wind" (NA 2224). He lied as "I hate it because I do not like it - I want to forget" (NA 2224). Then at the end of the story, he needs to decide whether to tell Kurzu's wife the truth to destroy her, or lie to make her relax. He lied to her. It may be that goodwill will tell a lie to him, but he also tells a lie. A part of Marlow died in the Congo, he became a liar, a disliked person. On the other hand, Kurtz entered the Congo as a respected person and had high expectations and plans for them.
