The physical and historical background of Scarlett is in Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Red Letter". The story mainly takes place in New England during the colonial period in the mid 17th century. As the novel's story goes on, the importance of that setting worsens further when the hero's Hester-Plein is isolated in a strict Puritan society.
