In the mid 1950's, people took more time to television and radio and reading became less and less. For this reason, the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishing Company established the National Book Council, a non-profit organization in 1954. Its purpose is to encourage people to read leisure time to grow, to "improve income and health", and "to develop a strong and happy family life".
Since the 1990s, the Library of Congress has made a technological breakthrough to fully integrate with the modern era. The library also has a national audiovisual center for accommodating these types of items for future research purposes.
