On 12th April 1955, Dr. Thomas Francis Jr. and Dr. Jonas Soak announced the successful results of the first polio vaccine. Researchers developed a vaccine using cells derived from a HeLa cell line derived from cancer tissue of Henrietta Lacks, a black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951. Mr. Lux's cell became the foundation of many medical innovations in the second half of the 20th century without family consent or understanding. When Lux, who lives in Baltimore, came to Johns Hopkins Hospital for medical care, the doctor found a lump in her cervix. A few months later, she discovered that her cancer cells continue to grow on the culture dish every 24 hours - this is the first "immortal" cell line in history.

Cell lines refer to all cells emerging from primitive cell division in cell culture. For example, when a cell proliferates and divides from the first cell in a cell culture, the first cell is the origin of the cell line. In cellular agriculture, researchers are looking for stable stem cell lines that can ideally divide into more cells in cell culture. Stem cells are unique cells because they can produce more copies (stem cells) of itself by self-replication or by different cells of different cell types.
