We established a theoretical two-dimensional model of prevalence and risk. The purpose of this research is to verify this model empirically to answer three questions. How important is recognition of several causes of traffic accidents in European drivers? Are there any significant differences in recognition among Member States? Based on samples from representative countries of at least 1,000 respondents, we collected data from 23 countries (n = 24,372). A face-to-face interview with an active car driver who has fully licensed using a questionnaire containing closed answer questions. Respondents were asked to rate the 15 causes of traffic accidents in 6 ordinal orders respectively. Answers are analyzed by calculating Kendall tau for each pair of items and forming a lower triangular similarity matrix for each country and Europe. These matrices are then used as input files for individual differential scaling to plot the pertinent 15 item recognition.

Risk and popularity hypothesis models are well suited to data and can answer to three noteworthy questions.
