P. H. Dellamot Crystal Palace Photo After one year's success at Grand Expo, the Crystal Palace of Joseph Paxton was opened and it was transferred to Sidenham which represents the next 85 years (Hobhouse, 32). The palace built at the London World Exposition in 1851 is a wonder of architecture and engineering modeled on a bridge in the middle of the 19th century and a train hut. The structure is quickly constructed from prefabricated parts and is designed to be easily rebuilt to other places.
Roger Fenton and Philipp Henry Dramot helped promote a new way of recording events. One is his photograph of the Crimean war and the other is a record of his disassembly and reconstruction at the Crystal Palace in London. Other photographers in the mid-19th century established this medium as a more accurate means of sculpture and lithography to record scenery and architecture. Crystal Palace was the world's largest glass curtain wall structure at the time. The foggy night in London must be a beautiful sight from the inside. The picture inside shows that it is enough to surround living trees. It reminds me of another large glass structure that visited Biosphere 2 in southern Arizona. According to Wikipedia, Crystal Palace has only 772,784 square feet on the first floor. I did not spend time finding out the exact specifications of the biosphere, but the article I found on the design site Curbed estimated that it was five times the size of the football stadium. If an end zone is included, it will be 142,000 or less, or one fifth of the size of the palace. This will make the Victorian manor house impressive according to today's standards
