San Diego State University was founded in 1897 to teach elementary school teachers to become the oldest university in the area. The original student training center was a room in a retail store in the city. By the 1930's, the university had its own 17-acre campus and began expanding to provide more expertise. Today, 20,000 students can learn science, business, and engineering on a large campus with multiple professional buildings.
The university was originally in the same place as San Diego High School and moved between places such as San Diego State University until the establishment of a permanent place in the 1950s. The university has more than 18,700 students, with over 100 major courses, 100 certificate programs and 1,500 courses per semester. New 88,000 square feet CTC - Career Technology Center - The 5-storey building opened in 2010 features beautiful, photography, digital art and nursing programs, student galleries, university police, an 11-storey accommodating 700 seats There is a car park. It is planned to start construction of arts and humanities, commercial technology and science building in 2001.
Cuyamaca College is a community college in the San Diego County community of Rancho San Diego, near El Cajon, California. Together with Grossmont University, it offers eastern suburbs in San Diego area. Cuyamaca College began in 1978 and currently offers 81 Associate Degree Programs and 66 Training Certification Programs for about 8,500 students. Many university students have enrolled at the University of California, San Diego or San Diego State University and have a bachelor's degree. Cuyamaca's mascot is coyotes
