Our Security-Conscious Society

1 Introduction In today's security-oriented society, there is a strong need for a reliable, powerful and convenient automatic user authentication method. Since September 2001 (the explosion of the World Trade Center), the general perception of the necessity of security has increased significantly, and the demand for personal authentication systems has been greatly increased (Wang et al., 2005). Biometrics plays an important role in today's security applications. Biometric systems are essentially pattern recognition systems that identify people based on their physiological or behavioral characteristics (Prabhakar et al., 2003).
