"Orange" Author: Gary Soto Gary Soto April 12, 1952 Born in Fresno, California, Mexican-American parents. His grandparents emigrated from Mexico during the Great Depression and found the work of farm workers. Soto grew up in the San Joaquin Valley and learned that household chores are rewarded by lawn transportation, grape picking, home painting and car washing. - "Orange", Gary Soto celebrates the affection of the 12-year old boy to his girl in the winter. The first line of poetry clearly shows that the boy was 12 years old when he was able to walk the road for the first time with a girl. This poem shows the tension they showed when they were walking down the street.

Gary Soto, born on April 12, 1952, was the second child of Manuel and Anji Soto. Families live in Fresno, California, as well as many Mexican Americans, Soto's parents and grandparents work at the state's agricultural center San Joaquin Valley. Typical work involves very little harvesting of oranges, cotton, grapes, or working at a dangerous packaging plant at local companies such as Sunmaid Raisin. When Soto was just five years old, his father was killed while working at Sunmaid. Manuel Soto's death had a devastating impact on his family, both mentally and economically.
