Open source has provided useful information flow to all sources in the intelligence community for collection and analysis. This report provides a framework for understanding open source smart modern practices. It reviews the literature on open source intelligence and reviews definitions used by the US information community in other areas in the context of modern open source information. This report explains the development of open source intelligence over the past 50 years, the definition of open source information and open source smart loops, and the comparison of intelligence fields between open source and other intelligence fields.
