In 1900, Texas suffered the most deadly natural disaster in American history during the hurricane in Galveston. However, with the advent of World War II, Texas flourished again. It kept prospering in the 1950s and 1960s. However, on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.
On the morning of 10th January 1901, an experienced mining engineer, Anthony F. Lucas, drilled the first major well in Spindletop, a southern hill of Beaumont, Texas. Established on October 5, 1930, the East Texas Oilfield is located in the eastern and central parts of the state and is the largest and most productive reservoir adjacent to the United States. Other areas were later discovered in West Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. The resulting Texas oil boom permanently changed the Texas economy and brought the most important economic expansion after the civil war.
