The Upper Green River catchment in Wyoming Province has the strongest emissions regulation for domestic oil and gas industry. The US Environmental Protection Agency issued similar Federal emissions regulations in May last year and cites the Upper Green experience in reducing ozone emissions as a good example. This week the Federal Court urged the EPA to begin implementing these rules nationwide. Erika Tokarz is a regulator of Ultra, one of the leading energy companies in the southwestern part of Wyoming. She walked along the Riverside in the Pinedale-Anticline oilfield and pointed out one way to suppress ozone - a row of large, bright blue aquaria filled with chemicals to remove nitrogen oxides. It is called SCR system or selective catalytic reduction system.

Wyoming has recently set requirements for reducing the risks of new and renovated oil and gas in the Upper Green River Basin through periodically mandated leakage exploration inspections. A more state-oriented approach is needed to better narrow down the new problem areas, but the state should also admire the proposal to extend these strong requirements to existing sources of information in the basin. Together with minimizing waste from the recently announced EPA Federal Methane Regulation and Land Management Bureau, these state requirements have a positive impact on air quality. Furthermore, the policy of discharging methane (the main component of natural gas) from the atmosphere and pipeline is not only beneficial for the environment but also for the industry (through the sale of additional natural gas) and for royalty of resource payment It is also beneficial for beneficiaries.
