NSAID’s In Competition Equines

Currently there is a law in the US prohibiting horses from taking NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) during the competition. The League of Nations (FEI) hopes to introduce a new law that allows these NSAIDs to be consumed by racehorse. Therefore, some people oppose it as each new legislation is passed. Each party has knowledgeable reasons and they choose to support or oppose change. The FEI wants to equally look at all aspects and implement educational evaluations that are fully educated about the new rules.

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are a group of drugs used to treat pain, relieve fever, and reduce inflammation. NSAID is commonly used to treat headaches, colds, menstrual pain and arthritis. NSAIDs have different names and types, and common NSAIDs include aspirin and ibuprofen. These drugs act by stopping a group of enzymes called cyclooxygenases 1 and 2 (COX - 1 and COX - 2) (2). These special enzymes are related to ovulation as they are involved in the production of prostaglandins (the same hormone - like compounds responsible for bringing your time). During ovulation, prostaglandin is also involved in the inflammatory response necessary for follicles to release eggs. Ovulation does not occur if follicles do not release eggs (2)

Vioxx is a COX - 2 selective non - steroidal anti - inflammatory drug (NSAID). Other COX - 2 selective NSAIDs currently on the market are Celebrex and valdecoxib. Vioxx is also associated with nonselective NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen. Please consult your doctor to determine which treatment is right for you. Results from clinical trials using one category of drug in certain categories may not be applicable to other drugs in the same category. There is a danger of long-term use due to all NSAIDs, especially gastrointestinal (stomach) bleeding, and liver and kidney toxicity. Patients taking these medications for a long period (over two weeks) should receive treatment under the supervision of a doctor.
