Nineteenth Century Hysteria: The Yellow Wallpaper

Narrator's husband John found that it was a doctor who diagnosed with a slight hysterical symptom in short story "Yellow wallpaper". Hysteria was not well understood in the 19th century, and it was thought to torture mainly women. He prescribed the most common treatment at that time: the rest of the treatment. This treatment restricts women to sleep, making the state with little physical or mental activity. The narrator did not agree with the diagnosis and treatment, but she initially thought that she could not contradict as John was a respected doctor as it was difficult for him to take care of himself. Narrator sometimes thinks that John is careful and caring, but sometimes she finds him operate and dismiss.
