As with all hydraulic pumps, the piston pump is a fixed capacity variable design. Piston pumps are usually the most versatile and robust pump type and offer a wide range of options for all types of systems. The piston pump operates at pressures above 6000 psi with high efficiency and relatively low noise. Many piston pump designs tend to have higher wear resistance than other types of pumps. The usual liquid viscosity of the piston pump is 10 to 160 cSt. There are two general types of gear pumps, inside and outside. There are different subtypes for each type, but they all produce flow by conveying fluid between the teeth of the meshing gear set. Generally it is less efficient than vane pumps and piston pumps, but gear pumps are generally more resistant to fluid contamination.
