New Amsterdam becomes New York

Governor Peter Stuyvesant of the Netherlands handed the new Dutch capital New Amsterdam to the British Navy Fleet under Colonel Richard Nichols. Stuyvesant wanted to resist the British army, but he was an unpopular ruler, and his Dutch refused to gather around him. After capture, the name of New Amsterdam has been changed to New York to commemorate the Duke's duties in New York.

The New Holland colony was founded in 1624 by the West India Company of the Netherlands and has grown to include all of New York and Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey. A successful Dutch settlement in the colony grew up at the south end of Manhattan Island and was named New Amsterdam

In 1626 the Dutch governor Peter Mignette officially purchased Manhattan from a local tribe in order to legalize claims against the Netherlands New Amsterdam. In 1664, the new Amsterdam was dominated by English, the settlers of the UK and the Netherlands were safely living. In 1673, when the Netherlands temporarily regained reconciliation, British rule was temporarily suspended. In 1674, New York returned to the UK, and in 1686 it became the first city to acquire the royal charter in the colony. After the American Revolutionary War, it became the first capital of the United States.

Twenty-three Jewish refugees who escaped persecution in the Netherlands of Brazil arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654 (to become New York City). In the second year, this small community founded a religious service in the city. By 1658 the Jews arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, seeking freedom of religion. A few Jews came to the British North American colonies primarily in the port town. By the end of the eighteenth century, the Jewish settlers established several synagogues.

The Dutch West India Company established a new Dutch colony in 1621. A few years later, its main settlement was founded in New Amsterdam. By 1640, New Amsterdam, later known as New York, became the focus of international trade. Thanks to its international flavor, the new Amsterdam has developed into a sanctuary for religious tolerance and cultural diversity. For example, in 1654, the first Jewish settlement in North America was in New Amsterdam, which fled from New Holland or Brazil. Also, in the 1650s German and Scandinavian Lutheran immigrants arrived in New Amsterdam and settled.
