Navy Pier's Ferris wheel reaches 1 million rides

Less than a year from the opening, Navy Pier's Ferris wheel celebrated an important milestone on Thursday.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Navy Pier in 2016, in lieu of the Ferris wheel set in 1995, attractions throughout the year, 196 feet high known as the Centennial Wheel, were opened to the public. Naval Pier announced that one rider in a million people will receive a free pass, a gift package, and a free ticket to local charity groups.

Navy Pier spokesperson Payal Patel said in the 20-year history that the old Ferris wheel hit one million people in a year.

The new Ferris wheel features 42 sealed temperature controlled gondolas with interactive video screen and upholstered seats. Children under 3 years old are free for adults $ 15, children 3 to 11 years old for $ 12. For the new wheel, the Navy Pier conducted a seasonal discount for free parking, fast pass for drivers to get on the train faster, all day pass for unlimited vehicles and Illinois residents

In 2014 and 2015, the average number of passengers in the past two years of full operation of the old Ferris wheel increased about 60%.

Navy Pier's 101st birthday will be 100 free rides to the 100th charity group.
