In its early history the United States has an isolatedist opinion on international policy. However, this has changed since the 20th century. The United States is now involved in many international organizations, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The United States is a founding member of NATO, a coalition of 29 countries in North America and Europe, aiming to protect Western Europe from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. According to the NATO Charter, the United States was forced to protect NATO countries attacked by external forces. The United States itself was the first country to call the Union's common defense provision in response to the September 11 attack. Through its history, the United States has taken unilateral and multilateral military action (see the US military action schedule). In the days after World War II, the country had permanent membership and veto power at the UN Security Council and was able to take any military action without formal opposition from the Security Council. Because of the huge military expenditure, the United States is known as the only superpower remaining after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
