National Science Foundation PhD Scholarship Biotin is an indispensable vitamin in the body and must be included in infant formulas and intravenous nutrient solutions. It is an important part of our diet, but we do not know the mechanism by which biotin (also known as vitamin H) is synthesized by desulfurized biotin in the body. The enzyme that completes this conversion is called biotin synthase. This enzyme catalyzes the insertion of sulfur between the deactivated biotin inactivation site and carbons C1 and C4 to produce biotin.
