Nation’s Oldest Windmill Manufacturer

Dempster Industries is a member of the Beatrice business community since the end of the 19th century. For many years, Nebraska was known for its large farms and farmlands. Without adequate equipment, farmers can not maintain and prosper their farms. If the technology is limited and all farming work is done without using high-tech machinery, tools are needed to benefit the family farm. With that in mind, Charles Dempster founded Dempster Industries in 1878.

In Australia, brothers Griffith of Toowoomba began manufacturing American style windmill in 1876, and in 1903 the company name of Southern Cross Windmill began. By using the water of the Great Artesian Basin, these windmills are the symbol of the rural village in Australia. Other well-known manufacturers are Adters, Perth and Sydney Metters Corporation. The first windmill manufactured in the United States was designed by Daniel Halladay who invented the windmill in Connecticut's machining factory in 1854. Halladay moved his strategy to Illinois because the windmill was very successful as a means to pump water in the expanding western border farms and meadows. In addition, wind turbines play an important role in the expansion of railways, as the initial steam-driven engine requires water for operation. After all, over 1,000 small and medium-sized factories started production of pump wind turbines, one of which sold nearly 100,000 in the peak market. Between 1850 and 1970, over 6 million mechanical windmills were installed in the United States.
