Edith Hamilton (1868-1963) was born in the state of Dresden, Germany, with American parents and grew up in Indiana. In the first quarter of the 20th century she was the principal of the Baltimore Brinmer School. After retirement, she began writing articles about the civilization of the ancient world and soon gained world famous classicists. Her famous and best-selling book contains myths, Greek methods, Roman way and Greek echo. In 1957, Greek King Paul called her her honorary citizen of Athens and thought she was the best point of her life.
Edith Hamilton's "myth" tells of "the eternal story of God and hero" in classical myth, first published in 1942, now it is an eternal masterpiece. This is the first mythological story I read, and it is still the best. When Hamilton talked about the story of Cupid and Psyche's love, or the tragic of Agamemnon and his children, she fully understood the meaning of Apraius and Aesiras. These are not children's stories, they are ancient Greek legends and religious beliefs. In addition, the illustration of Stil Savage has elegance of woodcut prints. That is the essence of them as far as I know. Since "transformation" is the most comprehensive ancient text dealing with classical myths, I am grateful that Hamilton chose to avoid relying on Orbit.
Edith Hamilton's very popular 'myth: the eternal story of God and hero' is a very basic, very popular and very good text to introduce the myths of Greece and Rome. Hamilton's book called "myth" is an extension of the material in the shorter book. However, the majority are repetition of the same material. In our Western culture the word "myth" is often equivalent to these stories, and the first writing by Hamilton before World War II strengthens this equation with modern generation readers I helped. Mythical stories of finding other cultures will be disappointing - except for the last short part of Norse mythology (about 5 percent of the entire volume), it covers everything but Greece and Rome Pantheon. Hamilton began writing articles with an article outlining what the myth is and what its purpose is.
