Folktales are different from myths and legends in that they do not always have a religious aspect and are not always finding the basis for historical truth. Folktales are actually "stories of people" including fictitious figures and situations. Most of them are verbal traditions, then they are written down. In the African-Americans tradition, we find that all Africans bring rich variety of folklore to long-term slavery. Their folk stories not only reflect the vast number of different backgrounds they derive but also reflect the new and diverse relationship they formed in the United States. It is this tradition that combines American tradition with Indian tradition to make American folklore one of the wealthiest folklore in the world. In many ways, the diversity of our folklore helps us to understand the complex concepts of the American "crucible" and shows us the meaning of Americans.

There are many differences among scholars on how to define folklore; therefore, the relationship between folklore and myths is different. One view is that the American folklorist Steven Thompson believes that the myth is a folklore; according to this method, the special feature of mythology is that it contains the sacred events that the story originally occurred . Other scholars consider folk tales as subdivision of myths, or consider two categories as separate but overlapping. The latter opinion was taken by what British classicist Jeffrey S. Kirk used it in "Myths: Its Significance and Function in Ancient and Other Cultures" (1970). The word "myth" is used to mean a story with a story beyond the story of a simple story. The term folklore is used to describe a story that reflects a simple social situation and common fear and desire.
