Sometimes, since two things are very closely related, we need a singular verb as we think they are single. "Steak and egg" is my favorite breakfast. My mother's "macaroni and cheese" is the best. There are two things surrounded by quotation marks, but they are closely related in these situations.

If you say "painting and painting", you may have two similar things considered as one thing.

My favorite hobby is to watch TV. I like watching television at free time. Watching TV is my hobby, but even if you are interested in this, it does not affect your studies.
