My Experience with the Community Garden

Through my experience in the community garden, I remembered Martin Luther King and Malcolm X's service activities. The community garden is operated through the Carroll County Human Services Program and is maintained by local volunteers. It has two objectives - not only does the garden provide food for local low-income families but it also provides the opportunity for these families to cook with healthy ingredients. Because healthy food tends to be more expensive than unhealthy foods, there are a lot of people who do not have the means to eat money or health.

According to SAGE Food Encyclopedia (2015), the community garden is an arbitrary garden planted by groups of people. These gardens can be grown by anyone self-identified community. Examples include community and community members, organizations, schools and students. Although all these types of communities are in Calgary, many community gardens are centered around community associations. (Calgary, 2017) Community gardens have traditionally been a response to the social crisis (Weissman, E., Robinson, J., 2015). Other families may not have enough food and goods. The community garden is very similar and I remember the story of the stone soup. The social crisis that emerges in modern society is food security.

In modern society community gardens are more common in Canada and the United States (Weissman, E., Robinson, J., 2015) because people are interested in alternatives to traditional food. There are many edible plants in these gardens, but there are many community gardens where you can borrow space and you can plant all kinds of plants. Plants from community gardens can be used for personal consumption, donation or sale and experience from the community garden is used for educational purposes, to support community development, or as a recreational facility and to function as an important public space (Weissman). , 2015. )
