The main responsibility of the recording engineer is to operate the mixing board, multitrack recorder, and other recording equipment used during the (recording) session. Engineers are technical experts who transform the artistic vision of artists and their producers into a recorded reality. Engineers and their assistants need to pay attention to details of the recording process and make decisions at each step. The first task of the conversation is to adjust the microphone and place it on an instrument to record. The type and arrangement of the microphone to use may have a significant impact on the final recording.

Due to advances in technology, producer roles gradually changed in the 1950s and 1960s. The development of multitrack recording has brought about a major change in the recording process. Before multitrack, you must play all elements of the song (vocals, alternative vocals, accompaniment of rhythm instruments, solo and orchestra part) at the same time. All these singers and musicians must gather at a big studio and record the performance. In multitrack recording, you can add vocals and solos at the same time by using as many "shooters" as possible after recording "bed track" (rhythm part of bass, drum, rhythm guitar etc). The first song using 20 instruments no longer requires all players to enter the studio at the same time.
