Montgomery is the capital of Alabama, the county seat of Montgomery County. Named after Richard Montgomery, it is located next to the Alabama River in the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico. In the 2010 census, the population of Montgomery was 205,764 people. It is the second most populous city in Alabama, the second largest city after Birmingham, the 118th largest city in the United States. The population of the Montgomery metropolitan area statistics area in 2010 is estimated to be 374,536 people, it is the fourth largest city in the state and 136th in the US metropolitan area.
The first European American settlers to the Montgomery district were led by General John Scott. Beginning with Montgomery of downtown today, the team founded Alabama Town 2 miles (3 km) downstream from Alabama. In June 1818, the county court moved from Fort Jackson to Alabama. Alabama entered the league in December 1819. Shortly thereafter, Andrew Dexter Jr. founded a new Philadelphia to the east of the city center today. He imagined an amazing future for his town; he made the top of the hill called the "Goat Mountain" future location of the State Capitol. The new Philadelphia soon prospered, and Scott and his accomplices built a new town in the neighborhood that called it East Alabama. These towns were originally competitors, merged on 3 December 1819, and merged with Montgomery Town.
