The main reason for seeing your students have no tags is because Canvas only knows how to handle work based on the names they submit. If you set your job to be online, Canvas is looking for an online application and you can not invalidate missing tags. Canvas does not know if you are using the tasks that you can submit by students using other methods

The understanding of this use case has deepened and changes were made to the Canvas Beta Release Notes (2017-09-25), and missing tags and late tags were deleted from the student's grades page and submission details page .
