All periods of the Middle Ages are defined by specific events, certain aspects of culture during that period, and certain people. Medieval times are no exception. The Middle Ages continued from about AD 350 until 1450. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, the western half of the Roman Empire began to divide into smaller, weaker kingdoms. By the end of the Middle Ages many modern European countries began to take shape. During this period predecessors of many modern institutions such as universities and representative government agencies were founded.
