Microbial infection is a ubiquitous phenomenon and in order to survive, each organism has evolved through various evolutionary mechanisms. Innate immunity to pathogenic microorganisms is considered the first line of defense; furthermore, it is known to be the oldest and also observed in plants, insect flies and humans. The mammalian innate immune system uses two strategies to identify invading microorganisms: (1) to identify microorganisms that are not themselves, and (2) to identify missing persons. The former is based on a pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP). PAMP is known to be a preservation product of microbial metabolism and is distributed in pathogens such as the LPS pattern (gram negative) in bacteria but not produced by the host.
