"Sea Knight" is a short story by Ralph Vaughan Williams with the same name as John Millington Synge. The composer completed the score in 1927, but he did not premiere at the Royal Conservatory of London until December 1, 1937. Opera is still mainly for students and amateurs until it entered the track of Sadler Wells in 1953. Vaughan Williams kept the text of Synge and made minor changes. The vocal score has been printed since 1936, but the complete orchestra score was not announced until 1973. Composer Edmund Rubra says that this work is rather an opera rather than a "drama of words viewed from the point of emotional power and expressive power".
