Mental Health within the Criminal Justice System

The aim of this paper is to address the role of state institutions in the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and broader education, employment and health organizations and to support and implement relocation programs for mentally impaired criminals. Mental health is obviously one of the most serious problems confronted by CJS in Australia and New South Wales State (New South Wales State), research indicates that mentally impaired criminals are the majority of the prison system I am occupying.

Elements of the program: The purpose of the mental health court is to identify the people who lead to their criminal behavior by mental health problems in the criminal justice system and to judge their eligibility as soon as possible after a criminal action has taken place. The target psychiatric hospital has various services such as treatment of mental health and drug use disorder, further promotion of housing application, case management including public welfare, transportation means, etc.

An important and interdisciplinary field of criminal justice and health policy is a better way to deal with mentally disabled people who are participating in the criminal justice system. According to the National Association for Mental Disorders, people experiencing a mental health crisis are more likely to encounter the police than to receive medical assistance. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 64% of prisoners suffer from mental health problems. Legislators are interested in policies aimed at improving the initial interaction with the criminal justice system of individuals in need of behavioral health. The two big efforts of the Legislature are to oblige police training and to develop requirements and standards for the crisis intervention team.

Why is this important to me? I started my career as a public advocate in Miami and I saw how the criminal justice system was well equipped to help mentally disabled people. Many of my clients have mental health problems, but they do not have access to the mental health services they need. As a result, these customers are often more likely to wait weeks or months to wait for the necessary treatment facilities simply by requesting them to enter the criminal justice system. On the contrary, my mentally ill patients are in jail and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) calls it "confusion, congestion, malodors, frustration and frustration of prisoners of psychosis" and unacceptable. The system is broken.
