Gender is a series of attitudes, beliefs, and actions that we associate with masculinity and femininity in general (Brym, 2011, p. 76). In many cases, these differences are built socially through various channels. One of them is music. In many cases, there is much confusion between the definition of "sex" and "gender". A simple way to understand these two definitions is to recall that "gender" refers to the physiological difference between men and women, "gender" refers to men or women defined by culture .
Music is one of the many needs human beings must achieve. Based on the reality of modern society, music plays an important role in human daily life. General music is very influential for both men and women today. Music is actually art that depicts human thought and emotion through the beauty of sound. Music also uses sound to express inner emotions. Like other arts, music reflects the feelings of individuals and society. Music is the result of human creation, the sense of life and the sensation of the world. In the past, music played a very important role in the eyes of primitive society.
Gender plays an important role in the music of various Native American communities. Men and women play a role of gender in many musical activities. Instruments, songs and dances are usually unique to either one, and many music scenes are strictly controlled by gender. In contemporary warfare, women play an important role as backup singers and dancers. For example, Cherokee had a ball before the baseball game. In these pre-game events, men and women will do separately and follow separate rules. Men dance around the circle of fire and women dance. Men sing their own songs, but women sing old people. Male songs call forces, but women's songs draw strength from their opponent's baseball team. In some societies, only men can play certain ritual drums. But there is also a ban on women sitting on Beg Drum.
Traditional Aleutian instruments are drums. This is a picture of Aleutian drum. In Aleutian culture only men are playing drums, but both men and women sing and dance. There are different songs in ritual events and social events. Traditional Aleutian music art has gradually declined after colonization, but today some aleutians are reviving older songs and traditions. Aleutian Islands travel extensively over the sea and frequently visit other Alaska indigenous settlements such as Alutiiq, Yup'ik, Tlingit, Haida etc. for trade purposes. Aleutians marries them from time to time, especially to the east neighbor, Alutiiq. On the other hand, they often go to war with Alutiiq. But these wars did not last long, and they usually return to the trading partner soon.
