Men and Nursing

Nursing is a profession that I have always been fascinated with. Care is defined as "health promotion, health maintenance, health restoration, care for patient death" (Kozier and Erb). Five values ​​essential to care, including altruism, autonomy, personal dignity, honesty, social justice (AACN). Nursing is a care of nurses as a core concept. Other features of the nursing profession include arts, science, advocacy and providing overall care.

Before modern care, men were nurses, not women. The oldest nurse school was founded in India in about 250 BC. St. Benedict enacted the Benedictine Care Order and the Catholic Church appointed the Order Hospital 5. During the war, it was common for men to apply as a nurse. During the American Civil War, the famous poet Walt Whitman volunteered as a nurse.

According to literature review, nursing men are still considered a special minority in the main occupation of women. Men who choose nursing as a profession may challenge the traditional role of gender fixed ideas. According to the results of the survey, male nurses seem to lack social recognition, acceptance and appropriate role model in nursing schools. There is also recognition that taking care is a hard work for men and it is regarded as a unique female competence from society. Men question masculinity and all caregivers must be homosexuals. Literature survey also proves that there is a crisis in the shortage of nurses. One way to solve this crisis is to encourage more men to participate in nursing. Quite a lot of research has used semi-structured detailed interviews. This mainly includes a series of open-ended questions that may cause the respondents to react excessively to respondents' answers.

In nursing men of the Canadian Nurses Association (Hanvey, 2004), a total of nine focus groups interviewed 46 male high school students and 45 male nurses. This study focused strongly on the stigma of gender related issues and nursing care as a male vocational option.
