Meet a Super Scientist!

Astronauts are not born to attend school but are learning science like other people! The curiosity and energy of Dr. Mägemisson taught her a lot. She went to the library and dance school. She also performed at school plays and was elected to her school government. Even if the astronaut is brave, Dr. Jamieson must overcome his fear just like all children.

It was the first day of 1961. 5 year old Mae Carol Jemison is a kindergarten teacher with confidence in reading. "What would you like to do when she was growing up," May replied. "The teacher seemed surprised, there were not many women scientists at the time, and of course there were few black women, but this is May's first and only choice.

Mei 's affection for science took her to the library. She read a book about the universe. She also likes science fiction. When I was in elementary school sixth grade she read the books of Madeline Len 's "wrinkles of time" and "stars of starfish". "These books are excellent because they have female scientists and girls heroines," Mae remembers.

Books are not the only way May learns. She actively participated in the student union, acted and learned dancing. "In the dance class, I became stronger, highly appreciated hard work, physical fitness, and elegance," she said.

A civil rights demonstration was held near Chicago when May was 12 years old. Mayor of Chicago convened a national guard who used the rifle to cross Mei, which is mainly the African American community, in order to prevent protest actions from taking place before an important political conference. Mei was afraid, confused, looked angry. I promised that she never fear again. She remembered: "I remind myself that I am a security guard like an American."

At the university, May learned physics and social science, and learned to speak Russian and African Swahili. She holds a degree in chemical engineering and African studies. After graduating from college, she studied medicine for four years and became a doctor.

In 1987, May joined NASA's astronaut program. She was trained to study space exploration in Texas. She is working at NASA, waiting for the shuttle's mission

When Space Shuttle Endeavor entered into orbit in 1992, Mei became the first African-American woman to go around the earth. Mei looked down from the shuttle and saw Chicago. She remembered visiting the library, doing science fair projects and dancing. "I think I am in space," she recalls. "I noticed that I can feel comfortable wherever I am in the universe because I belong to it and it is part of it just like any star, planet, asteroid, comet or nebula.
