Media Communication for Policy Change

Media will influence policy changes by enhancing public awareness, creating high visibility, encouraging community to hear and express opinions, and enhancing communication advocating policy changes. As the policy changes, the components are established and the community can tackle further changes. The Youth Media Campaign is a good example of how students and communities can gather in order to express the necessity of policy change through media to create educational reform.

Participation in communities is essential for the development of comprehensive changes in the policies of institutions (alcohol companies, media, schools, etc.) and public policies aimed at reducing access to young people's alcohol. Several community experiments involve the components of community organizations to mobilize and tackle public health issues policy (Wagenaar et al., 2000a; Holder et al., 1997). There is only one attempt of community change - CMCA mobilization - focusing on policy changes to reduce access to youth's commercial and social sources of alcohol. CMCA has tested the intervention of community organizations in a trial involving 15 communities randomly assigned as interventions or as a control community. The purpose of the community organization's intervention is to reduce the opportunity for young people under 21 years of age to drink alcohol.
