McDonald's is the world's largest fast-food store, serving tens of millions of customers every day. McDonald's Restaurant UK Ltd. was a wholly owned subsidiary of the parent company in the United States and opened its first UK branch in Woolwich in 1974. Britain is now a very important financial market for McDonald's shareholders, as 1,200 restaurants are located in the UK, accounting for only 4% of McDonald's restaurants in the world and 7% of the world's profits. McDonald actually began in 1954 when Rock Rock decided to turn a successful California shop owned by McDonald's brother into a chain.

McDonald opened the first British restaurant in October 1974. About 60% of them are owned and operated by the company. The rest are run by franchisees. McDonald's is a large employer. In September 2004, in the UK, the company owned 43,491 people: 40,699 hours hourly restaurant staff, 2,292 restaurant managers and 500 office staff. The McDonald's franchise member further employed 25,000 people. Most employees pay every hour and are called "fleet members". Their main responsibility is to prepare food, serve customers and carry out the task of effectively managing the restaurant.
