In her first autobiography Maya Angelow told her childhood through her graduation "Because I know why birds in the cage sing," when she was about to graduate. She finally began with an excited graduate as she receives her diploma and rewards her for all her academic records. On the day her graduation finally arrived, this happiness became a suspicion of her future, because she believed that blacks were only potential athletes or white servants.
