Oliver Reed plays Antonius Proximo. It is an old and rude gladiator trainer who purchased Maximus in North Africa. As the original gladiator he was released by Marcus Aurelius, gave Maximus his own armor, and eventually became a mentor of Maximus with the opportunity to be free. This is the last movie before the lead died during filming. In the original script, Proximo should exist. Tomas Arana is General of Quintus: Another Roman fighter who served under Maximus' friend. After betraying Maximus, Commodos served as the commander of ruling party officers. In the expanded version, Quintus saw the emperor's madness when forced to execute two innocent men. Quintus promised to respect Maximus' will by later paying for himself by refusing Commodus to win the second sword in the fight with Maximus.
To regain public approval, Commodus challenged the Maximus duel at the Coliseum. He got an advantage by stabbing Maximus before the game. Despite the injury, Maximus also lifted Comodos who the security guard refused to aid. Then Commodus made a hidden knife, Maxims drove to his throat and killed him. Maximus succumbed to his wound. Prior to his death, he asked for political reforms to give freedom to his gladiator's allies and to revive Senator Glaggs. Maximus's friends and allies regarded him as a "Roman soldier" and left Lucilla's command, leaving his dead Commodus behind and putting his body out of the battlefield.
