Structural plasticity is a network connection or structure. The network structure determines the flow of electrical activity in each nervous system and determines its functional and computational properties. Electrical activation of neurons starts with increasing intracellular calcium, which induces morphological modification of neurons on a later time scale. Morphological changes in the number of dendritic spines and axon buttons, as well as elongation, contraction and branching of axons and dendrites, have a direct effect on network connectivity in the adult brain.
According to Dr. Merzenich, the pioneer of the above plasticity study, certain conditions are important to maximize brain flexibility.
