Boys and men experience unbalanced "externalization" problems (eg, aggressive behavior, drug use disorders, and antisocial personality disorders) compared to girls and women. Unfortunately, little is known about how the etiology, expression and maintenance of male psychopathology works. We believe that this knowledge gap reflects the difficulty of considering the dynamic nature of male sexuality (the effect of male sexuality on male life depends on the environment, time and individual). Likewise, emotional regulation, the process by which individuals change their emotions according to the various needs of the environment, is itself an inherently dynamic structure. The difficulty of adjusting emotions has been recognized as a common source of infection for a range of psychiatric diagnosis and behavioral problems. Therefore, integrating literature on mood regulation and masculinity helps to understand the effects of sex on male psychopathology and to improve our ability to mitigate its harmful effects. In order to achieve this goal, we have reviewed and synthesized existing literature on male and mood regulation that is incorporated into the cross-framework of male sex and male psychopathology.
