The first President of SNCC was Marion Barry, later became Mayor of Washington, DC. Barry served as president for one year. The second President was Charles F. McDew, Chairman from 1961 to 1963 and succeeded John Lewis. Stokely Carmichael and H. "Rap" Brown was the president of the late 1960s. The secretary general of the SNCC, James Foreman, played an important role in the management of the organization. Members of SNCC suffered even greater risk in 1961 after members of KKK and other Caucasians attacked a comprehensive bus that violates the local apartheid law.
