The phrase quoted in the interview with Susan Myers is a very brief summary of what you will feel when looking for future careers. Our ocean, estuary, and other waters are vast and it is a shocking part of the earth where mankind has not fully explored yet. Every day, we discover new wonderful creatures, chemicals, and processes. With the possibility of large scale discovery, any scientific mind can understand my appeal in this field. That is why I would like to become an ocean and environmental science, an individual who acquired various ecological data, or an environmental conservationist like a park manager.

Suzi Spitzer is a doctoral student of the marine estuarine environmental science program of the University of Maryland Environmental Science Center. As a graduate assistant in Integrated Application Network (IAN), she is studying science communication and civil science. She is studying how community participation and scientific communication can effectively promote collaborative learning between scientists and the public in the context of civil science.

This blog was created by students who participated in the "Environment and Society" course, which is the basic course of the University of Maryland System Ocean River estuarine environmental science program. The interdisciplinary foundation and curriculum are the result of collaborative research between the University of Behavior Science University of Maryland and the University of Maryland Environmental Science Center.

This week, lecturer Bill Dennison is a professor of marine science and vice president of science applications at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES). Professor Denison studied seaweed and started a career as an ecologist who discovered a new type of phytoplankton (brown tide). After that his career was influenced by the doctorate fellowship at Stony Brook University and his career was used not only for natural research but also for science integration and application.

Environmental science is an interdisciplinary study on all aspects of geophysical and biological environments. It includes environmental chemistry, soil science, ecology, climatology, vegetation covering, marine and freshwater systems, recovery and conservation of the environment, agriculture and land use.
