The following is a complete copy of the TEDx presentation by NBC journalist Mariana Atencio. TEDxUniversity of Nevada conference. This incident occurred on January 21, 2017. Please read the full resume of the speaker here.

I am a reporter. My job is to talk with people all over the world. Today I would like to tell you why I decided to do this in my life and what I learned.

The story starts from Caracas of Venezuela in South America I grew up For me, this place is always full of magic and miracles. From my very youngest age, my parents wanted me to have a broader understanding of the world. My father came to me at the age of 7 and said, "Marina, I want to send you and your six-year-old sister to a place where no one can speak Spanish. I hope he is talking about the benefits of spending summer in America. "Summer camp, please highlight the word that I was not paying too much attention back then.

At the same time, I thought that we would go to Miami's summer camp in my 7 year old heart. Perhaps it will be better, we will go north to Orlando where Mickey Mouse lives. I am really excited

But my father had a slightly different plan: from Caracas, he sent us to Brainerd, Minnesota. There is no Mickey Mouse, neither cell phone nor Snapchat or Instagram, I can not find the information. The first thing I noticed when we got there was that the hair of the other children were shades of some blonds, most of them were blue eyes.

At the same time, this is how we look like. On the first night, the camp director gathered around the campfire and said, "Children, there is a very international camp this year, [can not hear] from Venezuela." Planets They will ask us the following questions: "Do you know what a hamburger is, or do you go to school in a donkey or canoe?" I answered in broken English They try to laugh. They know that they do not want to be sneaky people; they just know who we are and only want to connect with the world they know. We can be like a character in a book full of adventure stories like them, like Aladdin or the Jungle. Of course we do not look like them; we do not speak their language. We are different. It will be very painful when you are 7 years old.

Mariana Atencio was born in Venezuela in Caracas. Her father and her sister signed a summer camp in the United States. She feels like a playing card, most people have golden hair and blue eyes. The subject of Ted's conversation makes you different, so she really connects. At first she felt that she was not welcomed, "another one". Marianna's viewpoint is different. It's as if she were an alien of another world. She feels that he belongs to a different world and hopes to accept himself. The relationship with the theme constitutes a powerful Ted Talk, but most, if not all, topics can be related to it. When it comes to differences, it is difficult to see who a person is. Or, unless you treat others differently, you seem to be abandoned. Bullying, indifference, topics such as how we define our behavior with us are many of the topics we can cover. Maryanna described many personal life problems in his speech.
